Full Circle

Well it appears as though I have come full circle.  About a year ago, I moved into the basement of a family from church for a few weeks until J&K moved out of the loft and into their new home.  As of last weekend, I am moved out of the loft (J&K are hoping to sell it soon) and back into the same basement I called home when I first came here.

But not for long.

GOOD NEWS!  Ben and I recently got a house to rent in the beautiful area of Lakes Hiawatha and Nokomis in South Minneapolis. I am (we are) REALLY excited.  We were driving through the neighborhood and before I even saw the house I knew I wanted to move there.  After we looked through it, though, we were both sold.  Definite perks include:
-the location (near lakes, near ben's work, near a park, cute shops and restaurants and stores)
-Sierra-proof (fenced in backyard, unfinished basement with concrete floors and hardwood floors on the main level)
-has LOTS of character (bright blue kitchen walls with black-and-white tile, fun architecture and definitely cozy!)

Basically it's everything we wanted =)  Our move-in date is March 1st, and so I'll definitely be getting some pictures of it as soon as I can!
(oh, and when I say "our,"  I mean "my" move-in date.  I'll be living there by myself until May-ish.  Then I'm going to california until my wedding and Ben will move in.  Then post-wedding, we'll make it officially "our" abode!)

Anyway, it's been a fun and busy season of life for us!  I'm working a lot, wedding planning, fitting in a social life and it is actually making the time FLY by.  Can't believe we've been engaged almost 4 months!

On to pictural representation of my life!

Sierra curled up in the middle of my bed giving me the, "you're not actually gonna make me move, right?" face.

This is Kavya.  She is one well-fed baby.  Like, seriously well-fed.  But she's so adorable too =)

Found a cute and yummy eatery near our *new* home. =) I enjoy fun date nights with Ben.

It's called "Citizen's Cafe" and they brand their buns with a C*.  So cute.

I was going through my wallet and receipts and realized that we (Me and Karlina) eat at Chipotle a lot.  And we pretty much get the same thing every time.

 Karlina's new favorite face.

Playin' in the snow!  it was a 34 degree day and was actually enjoyable to be outside.

Sledding!

Ender pulling himself up and standing wherever he can!  Mobility just means I need to always be watching...oh, and keep the floor swept!

Seriously, she does the face a lot.  I told her she looked like an Angry Bird and so now she'll say "angry birds!" and make the face...then bust up laughing.  So cute.

Probably my favorite rhyming children's book outside of Dr. Suess.  Really fantastic book.  I recommend it.
This page has my favorite line:
He went and found a Manta ray
A Jazzy friend of his
Who told young Max, "Be cool little dude,
And groove on who you is."

Karlina singing a song called "Arms."  The line she was singing was, "You put your arms around me and I'm home."  with hand motions and everything =)

Oh and in case the populous of blog-world cared to know...Miss K put her poopies in the potty for the FIRST TIME for auntie!  It was a glorious and well-celebrated event!  lots of hugs, high-fives, dance parties, treats and a sticker on the potty chart!  YAY!  I was very proud of her!

Anyway, I'm off to exercise Sierra before a busy night at work!
see you all soon!

What a year it has been

It was the coldest day of the season...or so they said.   I didn't even own a coat suitable for being here. My body's cold-gauge had become numb about 30 degrees before. I looked around at the bare trees, the brown and gray that seemed to overwhelm every sight I saw.  I breathed a sigh of relief and also felt an unidentifiable twist in the depths of my soul.  This was my new home.  For an unknown amount of time.  It was both exciting and terrifying.
And from that day, my adventure began.
That was a year ago.  And time has flown by so fast.  I've been lonely.  I've made friends.  I've come to know God in ways I never had before.  I gained an amazing church family.  I became friends with the man I'm going to spend my life with.  I have a beautiful niece and nephew and a loving brother and SIL.  I have a job (three, actually) that I love.  I have a puppy who keeps me busy.
My life is headed in a different direction than I ever thought it would.  But it's ok.  I actually like it.  Don't get me wrong...I will always cherish things about how my life used to be.  I wouldn't be who I am today without all of those people, places, experiences etc...
But here I am in Minnesota.  Getting married.  Living life.  Loving God.  And would I really want it any other way?

Today I'm in Mendota Heights where I am snuggling with a cute little baby named Kavya.  Don't believe me?  Here is some proof:

Normally a lady from church watches Kavya, but she is out of town today and asked if I would watch her.  So we've been spending a lazy Friday together.  She's a sweetheart and a very low-key baby.

So this blog has pictures.  YAY PICTURES!

One night at work it was really slow.  I told my manager Mike that I was really hungry for a burger.  He exclaimed that he too was in the mood for a good burger!  So he came up with the grand idea to have a "best-and-messiest-burger"  competition.
We each came up with our own set of ingredients, gave it to the slightly apprehensive line cooks and awaited the results.
And me, being the always-ready blog-picture capture-er that I am, snapped a few pics for your viewing pleasure.

This GORGEOUS (and slightly stacked) burger is my genius creation.  I took one of our house-made burger patties prepared medium.  Melted some brie cheese on there, added a few slices of thick applewood smoked bacon, garnished it with a few crisp granny smith apple slices and topped all of that off with crispy onions, tomato and lettuce.  (due to the fact that I was unable to get my mouth around it, I removed the tomato and lettuce).  But seriously, it was a fabulous combination.  I was so impressed with myself.  The brie and bacon went together famously.  The tart crispiness of the apple added a fun complementary flavor.  DE-LISH!

This was Mikes:  Same burger patty prepared medium, melted cheddar cheese, an over-medium egg, andouille sausage, applewood smoked bacon, pickled onions and our own homemade fresh pickled cucumbers and lettuce.   Supposedly it was amazing and super manly and all of that.  Honestly, it looked really gross.  But hey, whatever floats his boat, eh?

Overall, it was a fantastic idea.  Great way to kill time on a slow night.  The cooks had fun critiquing the finished results too.

This is Sierra and a little doberman/rottweiler dog.  Sierra is about 10 lbs heavier, but they end up having a pretty even wrestling match when we see them at the dog park.

Now for adventures with Ben and Suzy.  When we aren't working hard, we squeeze in a few memorable and fun moments together!
As a side note, people think that because we live 15 minutes from each other we must see each other ALL the time.  This is in fact a myth.  Ben works a steady 8-4:30 job, has Bible study Monday nights and orchestra rehearsal on Tuesday nights, and church on Wednesday nights.  I work a very unpredictable job where all of my evenings from Wednesday to Sunday could be scheduled to work at the restaurant.  And I don't find out until one week in advance.  I too have a Bible study on Tuesday nights and the rest of my evenings are hit or miss.  In all, we see each other, if we're lucky, three times a week.  This includes Sundays at church.

Anyway.  On to adventure #1.  First attempt at registration.  I say attempt, because not much was accomplished.
Here is Ben using the awesome scanner gun.

 We both struggle with indecision.

Their expansive selection didn't help with that at all.

Overall, we didn't get much done except expose ourselves to the wonders of Bed Bath & Beyond.  and realize that we need a LOT of things to fill a house with.  We're taking it in steps to guard and protect both of our sanity.
We wrapped it up with a date night to Kincaids.  It was Ben's first time and all my coworkers were excited to meet him.  They are always asking me about him.

Adventure #2:  Short weekend road trip to Indiana to visit my brother John and his beautiful wife Amy!  It is a 10-ish hour drive...and we took Sierra.   You might remember from a previous post that we said we road trip well together.  And it's true.  We talk, listen to music, I read books aloud, we eat, sleep...overall a really great time.  And to answer the question I've gotten multiple times since we've gotten back:  Yes, we still like each other.
This was the first time Molly (John and amy's dog) and Sierra had met.  At first Sierra was a bit overwhelming for Molly.  And quite invasive on Molly's territory.  After a while, though, they realized they both enjoy a rousing game of tug-o-war.  And it was a little bit intense.  Honestly not sure if they were playing the whole time or if there was a little bit of alpha-dog establishment going on.

While there, we had an adventure within an adventure (those are the best...seriously)
On Saturday evening, we couldn't decide where we wanted to eat, so we landed on a food tour of Fort Wayne.  For those of you who aren't familiar with a food tour, allow me to explain.  You compile a number of places you are interested in eating and go from one to another only having a little taste of what they have to offer.  In big cities, they have pre-arranged food (or wine) tours where they are themed or organized in a way to complement each other...you pay a certain amount and go to each place.  It's more fun to make one up yourself.

On our way! Such happy campers!

First stop was close to home: The famous Grabill Dairy Sweet.  we decided to bookend our fooding with dessert =)

I got my favorite: A pomegranate dream-cloud.  What is this, you ask?  It is a pomegranate flavored slushy on top of soft-serve vanilla ice cream.  So yummy.

Next stop...ghetto-ville, Fort Wayne.  Otherwise known as Taqueria Coahuila.  Also otherwise known as the most delicious tacos I've had in a long time.

See those happy smiles? We were well-impressed by this little stop.

Technically Family Dollar isn't for food...but this sort of thing is about spontaneity...and that's just what this stop was.

A little bit of back story.  One of my co-workers is Bob the Dishwasher.  He's a pretty fantastic guy and is always a source of entertainment for everyone he meets.  Anyway, Bob went to the dollar store to shop for certain people at work for Christmas gifts. I was one of those lucky people.  So to return the favor, even though late, I decided to do a Christmas-dollar-store-gift for him!  Here is the loot:

On to the next foody spot!

Saigon Vietnamese food...and Chinese food...and American food.  We got Kung-pao beef, egg drop soup and some sort of coffee drink and crab rangoons.  It was very fun and yummy!

 John eats quite attractively.

After Saigon, we went for SUSHI!  Definitely a more classy stop than the previous...and SO yummy.  We shared some yummy rolls.

Me and the boy.

There was a soup ordered...oh the soup.  Smelled and tasted like warm ocean water...complete with floating seaweed.  In my humble opinion?  Disgusting.  John was a little apprehensive as well.

Benjamin, being the adventurous foody that he is, enjoyed it.  So we let him finish it off =)

Apparently being a Klotzle means you're a lil' bit crazy.  And our S.O.'s are the normal ones.  But it's ok.  It's why they love us. And we love them for loving us.  Win-win.

I didn't get any pictures of our final stop: Debrands Chocolate Store.  It was good...well I didn't have any of the chocolate...but it looked scrumptious.  I had coffee gelato instead.  Also yummy.  Overall, it was a fantastic food tour.  I'm so glad that I have family and a fiance that are adventurous, spontaneous and so much fun to be with!  Also super fun doing double-date type things.  who knew?

Mr. Ender in his super cute and trendy skinny-jeans.  The kid is a stud.

Karlina got a hold of the Nuk (or Nuht as she calls it).  She didn't used to want it ever.  And all the sudden she has gotten obsessed.  It takes a lot of distracting/compromising/downright refusing to deal with the issue of the Nuk. But she does look super cute.

Sometimes we play the game, "No! No! Don't give me kisses!" and then of course she showers me with kisses.  A little reverse psychology ;)  Sneaky Auntie.  But the sweetest moments are when she gives kisses all on her own.  The other night as I was getting ready to leave, she was playing in the other room and I called, "Good bye!" as I was about to walk out.  She ran over and said, "Hug, Auntie!" and grabbed me around my knees.  Melted my heart.

Overall, I am completely and totally blessed.  'Nuff said.

God cares.

I have been wondering what to blog about for a few days now…and nothing was coming to mind.  Then tonight, I was telling my friend Tanya a story and as part of it, I repeated to her a quote that I had heard not too long ago and then all the sudden I knew what I was going to write about!

Being completely honest here, I know from past personal experience that engagements are tricky things.  Not necessarily going through one as one of the blissfully happy couple (although that can be tricky too at times, I’m discovering)…but from the outside looking in.  On the one hand, you are supposed to be celebrating and rejoicing with the new couple…but on the other hand, there are a myriad of other emotions and feelings that could be taking place which prevent total joy and elation.

For example:

-maybe you really desire marriage or a committed relationship in your own life
-maybe you are afraid and frustrated that the engagement will affect your friendship with one or both of the people.
-maybe you were crushing on/really liked/had fallen in love with one of the people and now it seems all hope is lost.
-maybe you just gag to see all the mushy stuff people start posting on their facebook walls after they find their special someone.

There might be other reasons…I’m just naming the ones I’ve felt before.  At age 23, I have had a surprising amount of friends get married…and I can say that more often than not, one of these emotions or feelings follows in the wake of hearing about their commitment/engagement.  But you paste on a smile, tell them how happy you are for them in an annoyingly animated voice, give hugs and facebook likes all around and then go scribble frustrations on the unsuspecting and innocent pages of your journal.
I’ve also talked to a lot of my single friends over the past several years and know that I’m not the only one with these sentiments.
All of that to say…when I got engaged, I realized that now I was the one enjoying the benefits of this blessing in my life…and I had a lot of near and dear friends who were probably experiencing one of the above.  Because of all my experience in this particular area, my heart ached to know that somehow my engagement to Ben might cause some kind of pain or hurt to people I cared deeply about.  I went over and over all the ways I could try to tell people. Finding the balance between being excited and being obsessive.
One night as I was explaining this to Ben, he quoted this to me (he heard it from his dad who heard it from someone else…so I’m not sure of its origin):

God takes care of those who are affected by our obedience to Him.

As soon as I heard it, my heart settled and I was filled with peace.  Of course!  I was again reminded that there are no loose ends with God.  He’s got the WHOLE world in his hands.  While he was orchestrating Ben and I’s story, working it all out to bring us to the point in our lives where we are engaged to be married, he was also preparing all the people in our lives that would be impacted and affected by our engagement.  He cares deeply about all the hearts involved.  If I’m being honest with myself, every time that I was affected by someone else’s obedience to God’s plan in their life, He was more than faithful to take care of my heart.  And even in the bigger picture, he has provided me a suitable (and downright amazing) mate for my life.  All those times of complaining and wondering and doubting seem pretty insignificant when I’m basking in the beauty of God’s blessing in my life.

As I come to the end of my inspiration, I realize I’m not really sure why I wrote this post.  Part of me wants my single friends to know that I am mindful of them, especially through this season.  Part of me just wants to share that powerful truth with others who might wonder how their obedience to God might adversely affect those they care about (and this extends beyond marriage into many other aspects of life…this is just the way God brought this truth to me).  Because I really think it is a profound thought.  Truly understanding that I might love people and care for them…but how much more is God loving and caring for them.  He knows the plans he has for them.  Plans of a hope and a future.   If you have any thoughts or stories or testimonies of this (from either side), I’d love to hear them.

Now for some pictures!

Mr. Ender is getting two cute little top teeth!

Beautiful sunset on a Sunday afternoon

Ben's family lives right by a pretty good sized pond and they cleared off an ice rink to skate on.

Me and my future sisters-in-law, Claire on the left and Rose on the right

He's normally not THAT much taller than me...it was the skates.

My little family.

Beautiful sky

Cousin Leah came up with her brother Seth for the weekend!  It was fun to hang out with them and get to know them a little better!  I'm joining a pretty fab immediate/extended family.

For being such a small guy, Ender can make a pretty good sized mess.

He was sleeping so sweet.  And for any of you who might be concerned about the purple/yellow eye, it is just one of the joys of a baby who can pull himself up on unsteady things.  I think it was a folding chair he pulled over on himself.

I heard the toilet flush about four times in a row while I was taking care of some things in the kitchen and went in the bathroom to discover this mobile fellow having the time of his life.

Karlina decided she wanted to wear pajamas for her nap, and Ender too.  So we had a pajama party in the middle of the day.  She's pretty sweet with Ender most of the time.  And he actually finds her funny instead of being scared of her like he used to be.

Sorry there aren't more pictures of Karlina.  She is in an anti-photo phase and turns away for every picture unless it is completely unannounced.

Anyway, there is a snippet of my last week or so!
blessings on your week!
